What is Thunder Bay Mining Day?
Thunder Bay Mining Day (TBMD) serves to raise awareness of the importance of the mining and mineral exploration industries to the economy of Thunder Bay and Northwest Ontario and the importance of rocks and minerals in all of our lives. It is a free, family event held at Marina Park in mid-June consisting of a variety of exciting demonstrations, interactive activities and mining/exploration exhibits. This year was our 10th anniversary.
Who makes Mining Day happen?
TBMD is hosted by volunteers involved in the mining, mineral exploration and related supply and service industries in northwestern Ontario. The lead organization is the Northwestern Ontario Prospectors Association (NWOPA) with significant support from Women in Mining and the City of Thunder Bay.
Where does the funding for Mining Day come from?
TBMD is a not-for-profit event run by volunteers. We receive funding from mining, exploration and service companies active in Northwest Ontario. TBMD also receives support from the Province of Ontario, the City of Thunder Bay and various organizations involved with mining and exploration in Ontario. An example of our generous sponsors is illustrated in our top sponsor poster from 2025.
When and where is Mining Day held?
Mining Day takes place on June 13, 2026 at Thunder Bay Marina. The event runs throughout the day and is open to all members of the community.
